Robert S. Fletcher House

Formerly at 419 East College St. Jackson, TN

Circa 1883. Late Victorian style

Col. Robert Samuel Fletcher (1849-1931) built the home on East College St. Fletcher was born southwest of Jackson in the town of Denmark, and his family was one of the pioneer settlers in the area. He was married twice: in 1883 to Matie Walker Fletcher (1857-1984) - they enjoyed a year of marriage- and in 1888 to Pattie Currie Walker Fletcher (1859-1945).

Col. Fletcher was an involved and prominent citizen in Jackson and West Tennessee. He was in wholesale and retail grocery (Burkett & Fletcher about 1883), then into newspapers. He was president of the National Bank of Commerce, 1905-1931 editor of the Jackson Dispatch paper, and co-founded the West Tennessee Whig newspaper. Fletcher helped organize the first board of trade in Jackson in the 1880s and served as president.

After the Fletchers died, their son R. S. Fletcher, Jr. (1884-1970) and May Hefley Fletcher (1889-1965) inherited and resided at the property.

The home was razed - likely in the early 1970s - as the neighborhood is primarily commercial. The property was almost across the street from the current Jackson-Madison County Library.
