412 University Ave.( and Fifth St.) Oxford, MS

Circa 1880. 2-story Italianate style home

Horace Hewlett Walton (1848-1891) and Lydia Lewis Walton Young (1854-1925) built this home. They wed in 1875. He owned a hardware store on the Oxford Square. After her husband’s death, Lydia boarded Ole Miss students. She remarried to Dr. Alfred Alexander Young from Como, MS. Their son, Stark, and daughter, Julia, moved in. Stark was a novelist, playwright, and critic.

In 1925, the First Presbyterian Church purchased the home for use as a parsonage.

Nearly 50 years later, in 1974, the University of Mississippi purchased the property and housed its study of Southern Culture and then the Honors College until 1997. After that, it was repurposed and is adjacent to the University Museum.

In 2015, the home was renovated by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History with a Community Heritage Preservation Grant.
