619 N. Seventh St. Memphis, TN
Circa 1889. A Victorian cottage

The Love House was built by George Collins Love (1845-1928) in 1889. It sits in the oldest subdivision in Memphis - Greenlaw. Love and Mary Anne Graham Love (1858-1940) built it as a country retreat/ summer cottage. They married in 1884. Love was a successful businessman in the wood and lumber industry and made white oak barrel staves. Later, he entered the steamboat business. In 1901, he was elected to the Board of Public Works, and became head of the Department of Streets, Buildings, and Sewers. After Mary died, Love remarried to Lizzie D. Love (1855-1882). Â
Love’s daughters Mary Graham Love (1884-1981)and Octavia Margaret Love (1887-1976) inherited the home and resided there until 1976. The sisters donated the Love House as well as a few other properties in the Greenlaw area to the city after 1979. The Love House, along with five other historic homes, helped to rejuvenate the Greenlaw area.Â

Lately, the home has been used as the Non-Profit Housing Center with the City of Memphis Division of Housing and Community Development. NR 1979
