31 Government Fleet Rd. Natchez, MS

Circa 1784. Remodeled 1832 with Greek Revival addition/ 1860

One of the first Greek Revival mansions in Natchez.

Juan St. Germaine built the original portion of the home. He was a Native American interpreter and participated in the tobacco boom in the Mississippi territory in the 1780s. .

In 1832, Levin Rothrock Marshall (1800-1870) bought it and added the Greek portion. Marshall was a successful banker and planter and the first president of the Commercial Bank. He was married twice: Maria Louisa Chotard Marshall (1807-1833)(m.1826) and Sarah St. John Elliot Marshall (1803-1895)(m.1834). Twenty-eight years later, in 1856, the English portion was added. He amassed about 2,500 acres in the area by 1860 and later greatly enlarged his holdings to 25,000 acres in three states. His son George Marshall married Charlotte Hunt Marshall , daughter of David Hunt, and they lived at Lansdowne. Marshall had interests in Texas, and the town of Marshall, TX is named in his honor.

The architecture of Richmond shows three distinct styles: the center portion is original Spanish; the front is Greek; and the remainder is English.

In 1940, there were 7 owner/ heirs of the late Shelby Marshall - the fifth and sixth generations of Levin R. Marshall. NR 1978 See Lansdowne
