The Bowling-Hughes House was built for Dr. George Snadon Bowling (1853-1917) and Lady Smiley Bugg Bowling (?-1931) in 1880. They wed in 1876.
It was built in Italianate Revival style on a former part of the Dr. Joshua & Marianna Cobb estate at 503 Madison St. George and Lady married in 1876. Dr. Bowling was one of the first attendees of Vanderbilt University medical school in 1875, and had physician relatives: uncle, Dr. William K. Bowling of Nashville and grandfather, Dr. James S. Bowling of Kentucky.
From 1875-1880, Dr. Bowling returned to Clarksville and began to farm. Then, Bowling started the first ice plant in Clarksville in 1881 with his brother, James Bowling. In 1884, they added bottling and created Clarksville Ice Factory and Bottling Works. In 1887, the Bowling brothers merged with the Cunningham Brothers’ coal and feed business to create Bowling Brothers and Cunningham. They had one of the most extensive factories in Tennessee. In 1895, the office was located at Fifth and Franklin St. In 1886, Dr. Bowling was on the board of Farmers and Merchants National Bank in Clarksville.
Lady sold her house to Dr. Maurice Langdon Hughes (1874-1937) and Virginia Fountain Barker Hughes (1887-1970) in 1920. They wed in 1919. Dr. Hughes was vice president of the Middle Tennessee Medical Association and a member of Clarksville Hospital since its founding in 1915. James Maynard, a local contractor, purchased the property at auction in 1959 and renovated it. He owned Maynard Construction. There were several owners in the late 2000s. Since 2010, the law office of Steven C. Girsky has operated from the property.
