Eppy White Plantation

Near Poplar Rd. & S. White Station Rd. Memphis, TN

Circa early 1830s. 2-story white columned home

Col. Epaphroditus "Eppy" White (1790-1853) and Martha M.Cox White (1793-1873) built their home east of Memphis. They wed in 1817.

The White family plantation was about eight miles east of the original Memphis area with great farmland. They had about 9,000 acres, and there is at least one credible source that called their home "Donelson".

In the first years of the plantation, White had a wagon yard and a tavern/ coach house for travelers along the Alabama Road. Evidently, White found the highest land for his home between the Wolf River and Nonconnah Creek. Their home was near the Alabama Road, then State Line Rd., then Poplar Ave. & Hwys 72 & 57.

Col. White was a Georgia native who moved to the area for a new life, and he became very involved in the new settlement. 1831 and 1843, he was voted a justice of the peace for the Shelby Co. courts. He was Postmaster of Pea Ridge (Germantown) from 1832-34. From 1835-1841, he served as Lagrange and Memphis Rail Road Commissioner. In 1837, White formed the Memphis and Holly Springs Turnpike Co. He spearheaded the recruitment of the Memphis and Charleston railroad to the area and past his land in 1852. He was famous for donating 2 acres of land for the Eudora Baptist Church. In 1873, the county seat which had been moved around was located at White Station.

The White plantation lands on the east shared a boundary with the Nashoba Plantation (experiment) of the utopian colony of Frances Wright.

Wilks Brooks and later his son Jo Brooks owned a approx. 140 acre southern portion of the property known as Wilks Brooks House/ Kirby Farmhouse. Records are unclear whether the Kirby family built a new home or added onto the White home.

The home was razed for an expressway in 1966 - likely the Sam Cooper Parkway, a portion of the controversial Interstate 40 plans. See Wilks Brooks/ Kirby Farmhouse
