[Raleigh, TN was settled in 1816. Eight years later, it was the county seat of the area courts and the town grew. The springs in the area were found to be medicinal, and by 1842, the first spa resort was advertised. But in 1866, the county seat was moved to Memphis and so did the courts, and Raleigh was left a quiet town. Decades later, in 1892, the members of the Duke family of North Carolina went to the area and built a large hotel named the Raleigh Inn on part of or adjacent to Goodwin’s Goodwinslow lands. Eleven years later, about 1902, it closed. Evidently, the water table in the Raleigh springs dropped, and Memphis was able to establish its own clean water system.]

In 1866, William Washington Goodwin (1846-1922) moved from Middle Tennessee to Memphis and re-established a law practice. Goodwinslow was started in 1875 by Goodwin and Mary Blythe Goodwin (1851-1926). Because of an earlier home fire in 1912, he tried to build a fireproof home. Goodwinslow is considered the oldest house in Raleigh. The North section was constructed in 1875 as an English medieval castle; mid 1880s saw a gable roof added; an addition was made on the south end in 1890; finally in 1900 additions were remodeled as an Italian villa.
After Goodwin passed away, his daughter, Anne Goodwin Winslow (1875-1959), inherited the property. She wed Brigadier General Eben Eveleth Winslow (1861-1928) in 1900. Eben rose to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army and served as an engineer in many places. In 1922, he retired, and he and his family returned to Goodwinslow. They operated a farm with cotton, fruit, nuts, pigs and cattle. Anne was a renowned and published poet, and the family enjoyed many literary friends to visit.
Then, the Winslow’s daughter, Mary Winslow Chapman Simonton (1903-1995), and Charles Simonton Chapman (1886-1953). They married in 1938. His first wife was Elsie Harris Forbess Chapman.

Then her son (Evelan) Winslow “Buddy” Chapman and Pamela “Pam” Chapman (1954-2019) were the next owners with 6 acres. It is now in the Windemere Hills subdivision. He was a Memphis Police Commissioner and reformer. He was the first and only civil police officer. He ran Crimestoppers of Memphis and Shelby Co. In 1977, he served as an Executive Assistant to the Mayor.
