406 North Academy Dr. Murfreesboro, TN

Circa 1857. 2-story brick Federal home

Marmon Spence (1798-1847) and Sarah Wasson Spence(1791-1857) constructed their home on North Academy St. He was a four-term mayor of Murfreesoboro and a businessman. The home is part of the Lytle Subdivision (1818) which was the first expansion from the original Murfreesboro plan.

John Doran Alexander (1813-1870) and Mary Robena Baird Alexander (1816-1851) purchased the home during the Civil War.

In 1865, Alexander sold the home to John L. McGaughey (1806-1843) and Nancy D. Sowell Williams McGaughey (1809-1866)(m.1826).

In 1873, the next owner was Allen Battle Crockett (1830-1899) and Louisa Hall Crockett (1834-1894)(m.1851).

The Crockett family sold the property to Henry Harrison Kerr and Elizabeth Jordan Wilson Kerr about 1896. Kerr was a merchant (H.H. Kerr) and was a partner in Kerr & Robison

In 2022, the home remained in the Kerr family. In 2024, Alan and Beth Morris owned the property and have been restoring it.
