John L. H. Tomlin (1826-1905) was the second mayor of Jackson (1845-1854). as well as one of the first postmasters in 1841. Tomlin was married twice: Amanda Caroline Elder Tomlin (1827-1853)(m. 1846) and Elvira Bruce Tomlin (? -1910).

He was an attorney and had large law library. It is unclear whether Tomlin or his father, John H. Tomlin, was literary friends with Edgar Allan Poe. The home was located at the site of the current Jackson-Madison Co. Library.
