Idlewild was located at 809 Main Street in Edgefield (near the current intersection of Main St. and Neill Ave.) across the river from downtown Nashville. Built about 1848, it was the home of Neill Smith Brown (1810-1886) and Mary Ann Trimble Brown (1818-1895). Mary Ann was the daughter of Judge Trimble. He met and married Martha Rebecca (Beverly) Bright (1819-1848) in Virginia in 1839. Nine years after their marriage, in 1848, they moved to Middle Tennessee and into their Richland Grove home with 375 acres near 5101 Charlotte Ave. It had been built two years earlier in 1846.
